St Dunstan-in-the-East, EC3R
Positioned within the ruins of a Gothic church, this spectacular park sits between Lower Thames Street and Eastcheap. The original medieval building was destroyed on three separate occasions, including during the Great Fire of London. When it was bombed in the Blitz, the City of London Corporation decided against a costly rebuild, and instead converted it into a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the financial district. The chapel’s majestic arches are covered in climbing ivy, giving the historic structure a fairytale-like atmosphere. Park benches placed throughout provide a place to read or reflect, and a fountain at the centre of the nave adds to the tranquility of the setting. Consider visiting at golden hour, when light pours through the grand window frames to create a dramatic backdrop for photography.
St Paul’s Church Gardens, WC2E
The West End is one of the busiest areas in London, but a few steps from the crowds is a peaceful square steeped in history. The Grade I Listed St Paul’s is known as the “Actors’ Church” for its long association with British theatre. Within the church itself visitors will find over 180 memorial plaques dedicated to stars including Charlie Chaplin, Vivien Leigh and Barbara Windsor, with an additional 130 outside. The courtyard is ideal for a pause before exploring the Piazza or heading to Theatreland to see one of the many shows being performed. In fact, there is no need to leave to take in an incredible performance, as St Paul’s hosts a candlelit concert series, covering works ranging from musical theatre classics to iconic movie soundtracks.

Mount Street Gardens, W1K
Among the elegant roads of Mayfair is an idyllic retreat, close to Park Lane and Berkeley Square. Created on the site of a former burial ground, the lawns are surrounded by handsome red-brick buildings, including the Grade II Listed Church of the Immaculate Conception and the historic Mayfair Library. This leafy oasis comes alive in spring and summer, with mature trees, shaded benches and colourful roses making it one of the neighbourhood’s most charming hidden corners. Despite its central location, it feels incredibly discreet, perfect for a relaxed lunch break or time to unwind after browsing the boutiques of Mount Street.

Set back from Shaftesbury Avenue, this pocket of greenery was developed with urban wildlife in mind, offering a protected habitat for birds, bees and the West End’s only frog population. Its laid-back feel adds to its charm, with colourful plants and narrow paths around the pond and insect houses. Now a registered charity, it is run by the local community, who take great pride in ensuring it is well maintained and looking its best. Dotted with field poppies, wisteria and even a wild pear tree, it’s easy to forget that the amenities of Soho and Leicester Square are just around the corner.
