Architectural appeal

Our top tips on how to highlight your home’s finest features

Architectural details are often what give a home its character, but they can be easy to overlook when decorating. From staircases to period fireplaces and high ceilings, these help to give your property its own unique flair. With the right lighting, a carefully selected colour palette and thoughtful interior design choices, you can elevate the space and create a warm, inviting atmosphere throughout. Read on for our expert advice on making your space stand out.

Elegant entranceways

An entrance hall helps to shape first impressions from the moment you arrive, and with the right design choices it can become an incredibly striking feature. Although seemingly a simple change, carefully layered lighting can make a significant difference to appearance. Discreet LEDs beneath each step of a stairway create a “glow” effect, while low-level wall lights guide the eye without creating glare. In properties with high ceilings, a pendant or grand chandelier can also accentuate height and proportions. Glass balustrades provide a modern touch, while carpeted stairs add texture and encourage a warm and welcoming atmosphere. For period homes in particular, a well-chosen runner can soften the overall look while still showcasing the original staircase beneath. To avoid clutter, consider bespoke fitted joinery, which is built to maximise storage while blending in elegantly with the rest of the interiors.

Wonderful windows

Thanks to their Victorian and Edwardian origins, many London residences benefit from large sash windows, which flood rooms with daylight and establish a brighter, more open environment. To take advantage of this, opt for curtains or blinds that complement the colour scheme of the room, as this will allow the glazing to remain the focal point. Keep the space around the windows clear, and arrange sofas and armchairs to face towards it so the seating area frames the view and makes the most of the surroundings. Where layout allows, a built-in window seat offers the perfect spot for reading while adding useful storage.

Fabulous fireplaces

Whether working or decorative, a fireplace is one of the easiest architectural features to turn into a centrepoint. A statement mirror or artwork above the mantelpiece emphasises the symmetry of the room, while small touches such as a vase or sculpture can add interest without appearing cluttered. Keep the hearth clear apart from a fire basket or neatly stacked logs, as this avoids distracting from tiles or ornamental motifs. For a more contemporary feel, consider painting the chimney breast a different colour, as this can help to naturally highlight the fireplace.
