The Covent Garden Corps

A historic property in the heart of the city

Exchange Court is one of the many little alleys that leads off the Strand. Slap bang in the middle of London, the area is known today for attracting tourists thanks to its theatres upon theatres, famous galleries and world-renowned restaurants. But, wind back the clock, and you’ll find that Covent Garden has a long and rich history dating to the medieval period.

Described as a ‘walled garden’ in 1200, this neighbourhood remained largely underdeveloped until the reign of Henry VIII, who confiscated it from Westminster Abbey and sold it for development. In the years that followed, houses and small courts began to pop up along the north side of the Strand, and by the 19th century, the district had a busy market square, well known for its coffee houses and taverns.

On Exchange Court, an interesting tenant took residence in the aftermath of the Crimean War. This was the Corps of the Commissionaires, founded in 1859 to provide gainful employment for ex-servicemen returning from the Crimea.

Set up by Captain Edward, a soldier and proprietor of the Times newspaper, the organisation helped impoverished veterans resettle, earn a proper wage and regain their dignity. Most ended up working as security guards and doorman, and today, the Corps of the Commissionaires is considered the oldest security company in the world.

Although the company has now expanded beyond its initial residence, an elegant apartment in the original 17th century building it once occupied is available for sale. Grand and stately, with a white pillared entrance, the property offers two bedrooms and two bathrooms, newly renovated with neutral tones and high specification finishes.

“Tucked away on a quiet mews, this flat is rare because it offers peace and tranquillity in one of London’s busiest and most lively areas,” says Michael Keating, Director of Dexters Bloomsbury.

“For those looking to enjoy city life, Trafalgar Square and the Savoy Hotel are just moments away, while Covent Garden, Embankment and Leicester Square tube stations provide easy access to the rest of London. Whoever buys this property will truly be purchasing a piece of history."
